“Little Green Thumbs” Garden Walk & Farming Practice
Our school garden was filled with dirt-covered hands, wide eyes, and absolute wonder today for our “Little Green Thumbs” Garden Walk & Farming Practice Program!
Grounded beautifully in our physical and cognitive development curriculum, this practical program took our learners out of the classroom and straight into nature. Our little stars spent the morning exploring plant textures, digging holes to sow seeds, and balancing miniature watering cans to care for our rows of fresh Covo and cabbages. This interactive experience does more than teach children where food comes from—it builds their motor skills, sparks mathematical sorting logic, and instills a deep sense of responsibility and Ubuntu as they care for the earth. At Morning Star, we believe in nurturing the whole child, showing them that with a little love, patience, and hard work, great things can grow!
The Little Farmers Itinerary
Equipped with miniature sun hats, children walk through our thriving school vegetable garden in small class groups. Teachers guide them to gently touch soft leaves, smell fresh herbs, and look for tiny garden helpers like earthworms and butterflies.
- ECD Focus (Sensory/Language): Expanding descriptive vocabulary by identifying textures (rough, smooth, wet, fuzzy) and colors in nature.
Children move to our loose-soil planting beds. Using child-safe hand trowels or their fingers, they practice digging small holes, dropping in vegetable seeds (like spinach or beans), and gently tucking them in with soil.
- ECD Focus (Fine Motor Skills): Refining the pincer grasp, hand-eye coordination, and finger isolation required for early handwriting mechanics.
Learners work in teams to fill small, lightweight watering cans from a safe central bucket and carry them carefully to water their newly planted seeds and our growing cabbage patches.
- ECD Focus (Gross Motor Coordination): Building physical core stability, hand strength, spatial balance, and the social skill of taking turns.
The walk finishes at our open-air picnic mats. Children look at mature vegetables pulled straight from the ground (like carrots, onions, and sweet potatoes) and learn to match them to the healthy dishes they eat at home. They enjoy a fresh fruit and vegetable juice snack.
- ECD Focus (Cognitive Logic): Connecting real-world physical labor with cause-and-effect outcomes (i.e., “Watering this plant helps it grow food for my family”).
Curriculum Integration Breakdown
| Developmental Pillar | How Farming Practice Shapes Our Learners |
| Cognitive Science & Logic | Introducing foundational biological concepts—how plants drink water, the role of sunshine, and the step-by-step cycle of life from seed to table. |
| Physical Dexterity | Combining heavy gross motor movements (carrying water, digging) with highly precise fine motor actions (handling delicate seedlings). |
| Moral Responsibility | Cultivating patience, accountability, and pride in self-reliance as children actively care for living things that depend on them. |
